Private Matrix & XMPP Chat Server Hosting
Run your own Matrix homeserver or XMPP server on anonymous infrastructure. Federation with the open chat network while retaining legal and operational control.
Key requirements
- Reliable uptime (chat must be always-on)
- Adequate RAM (Synapse is RAM-hungry)
- Clean IP for federation reputation
- Jurisdiction with communication privacy law
- Full root + TLS configuration flexibility
Matrix vs XMPP
Matrix is the newer, more feature-rich protocol — federation, rich media, end-to-end encryption via Megolm, bridging. XMPP is older, more lightweight, and has better battery life on mobile. For most communities Matrix is the right choice; for technical/IRC-like communities XMPP is lower overhead.
Resource planning
Synapse (Matrix): 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB for 10–50 users, 8 GB for 100+ users. Dendrite (Matrix) is much lighter. Prosody (XMPP) runs comfortably on 1 GB RAM for 100 users. VPS-S covers XMPP, VPS-M covers small Matrix, VPS-L for serious Matrix.
Privacy considerations
Self-hosting removes the commercial homeserver's knowledge of who you talk to. Your server knows — but your server is in a jurisdiction you chose, under a legal framework you trust. Switzerland is the canonical choice for chat server operators; Iceland is a strong alternative.
Best jurisdictions for chat servers
Switzerland for FADP, Iceland for free speech, Romania for budget.
Iceland
Free Speech HavenStrong privacy laws, renewable energy, outside EU.
Panama
No Data RetentionNo retention laws, no MLAT with most western countries.
Romania
Anti-RetentionCourts struck down data retention laws. Great EU connectivity.
Switzerland

Matrix/XMPP Hosting — FAQ
01 Does federation work?
Yes. Standard TCP ports are open. Configure your DNS SRV records, install a valid TLS certificate (Let's Encrypt works), and federation with matrix.org and any other homeserver works out of the box.
02 Will my IP be flagged by other Matrix servers?
Our IP ranges are not on Matrix ACL blocklists. If a specific homeserver blocklists you, that's their ACL, not a network-level issue.
03 Can I run a bridge (Discord/Signal/WhatsApp bridges)?
Yes — mautrix bridges run well on VPS-M or VPS-L. Each bridge roughly doubles the RAM footprint.
04 What about voice/video (Jitsi)?
Jitsi Meet runs on VPS-L or dedicated (needs CPU for WebRTC SFU). Use a VPS-M for 5–10 concurrent video participants, VPS-L for 30+.
05 Can I host a community as a business?
Yes. Per-jurisdiction tax obligations are on you; our infrastructure has no restriction on commercial chat services.
